Small Part, Big Job
A universal joint, or U-joint, is a cross-shaped part with four needle-bearing caps that connects the driveshaft to the transmission, transfer case and differential yokes. It lets the driveshaft spin while the angle between parts changes as the suspension moves up and down. Trucks, vans, SUVs, rear-wheel-drive cars and many 4WD front axles all rely on U-joints.
U-joints are small and relatively simple, but they carry all of the engine’s torque. When they wear, they cause noise and vibration, and when they fail, they can drop a driveshaft onto the road. U-joint replacement in Glendale, AZ is a routine repair that prevents a much more serious problem.
Symptoms of a Worn U-Joint
- Squeaking or chirping at low speed, which rises in pitch as you speed up and is often the first sign of a dry joint
- Clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or when getting on and off the throttle
- Vibration that increases with speed, felt through the floor and seat
- Rust-colored dust around the bearing caps, a sign the needle bearings are wearing
- Visible play when the driveshaft is rotated by hand
- Fluid leak at the transmission tail, since a worn joint can let the slip yoke wobble and wear the rear seal
Why U-Joints Wear Out
Lack of Lubrication
Many factory U-joints are sealed for life and cannot be greased. Once their internal grease breaks down or the seals fail, wear accelerates. Replacement joints often include grease fittings so they can be serviced.
Heat and Dust
High temperatures in the Phoenix area harden seals and thin out grease. Dust from dirt roads and construction areas can get past worn seals and act as an abrasive.
Load and Towing
Heavy loads and trailers put extra torque through the driveline, especially when accelerating from a stop.
Driveline Angles
Lift kits, lowered suspensions and sagging springs change the angle the joint operates at. Steeper angles mean faster wear.
Water and Off-Road Use
Water crossings can wash out grease and introduce moisture that corrodes the needle bearings.
Where U-Joints Are Found
- At both ends of most rear driveshafts
- On front driveshafts of 4WD trucks and SUVs
- In two-piece driveshafts with a center support bearing, which may have three or more joints
- In the front axle shafts of solid front axle 4WD vehicles, where they act as the steering joints
- In double-cardan joints on some front driveshafts
Our U-Joint Replacement Process
- Inspect the entire driveline for play in each joint, center bearing condition, yoke wear and driveshaft damage.
- Mark the driveshaft so it goes back in the same orientation to preserve balance and phasing.
- Remove the driveshaft and press out the old joints carefully to avoid bending the yokes.
- Install quality replacement joints and new retaining clips or straps, making sure caps are fully seated.
- Grease serviceable joints until fresh grease appears at each seal.
- Reinstall and torque the driveshaft fasteners to specification.
- Road test to confirm noise and vibration are gone.
Replace One Joint or All of Them?
If one U-joint is worn, the others on the same driveshaft have the same miles and conditions. Replacing them together is often more cost-effective since the shaft is already out. We inspect each joint and give you the option based on what we find.
When It Is Not the U-Joint
Driveline vibrations can come from tires, wheels, a bent shaft, a worn center bearing, incorrect angles or a worn transmission mount. Clunks can come from differential backlash or slip yoke spline wear. Squeaks can be suspension bushings. We pinpoint the source, and if the problem is elsewhere in the driveshaft, our driveshaft repair service covers it.
Combine With Other Services
U-joints are easy to inspect during routine service. When your truck is in for rear differential service, 4×4 service or a transmission fluid change, we check the joints and grease any that have fittings.
Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs
A failing U-joint can separate, letting the driveshaft drop. At speed this can damage the transmission, fuel lines, exhaust and brake lines, and can cause loss of control. If you hear a new clunk or feel a sudden vibration, slow down and have it checked. Call Sun West Transmissions at (623) 473-9800.

Can I grease a sealed U-joint?
No. Sealed joints have no fitting. Replacement joints with fittings can be serviced going forward.
How much does U-joint replacement cost?
