When Your Cummins Will Not Go Into Overdrive

The 48RE is a four-speed automatic used behind the 5.9 Cummins diesel in Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks during the mid-2000s. It is a heavy-duty evolution of the older 47RE and A618 family, with a hydraulically controlled three-speed main section and a separate overdrive unit bolted to the back. Because the overdrive is its own assembly with its own clutches, overdrive complaints are among the most common 48RE problems we see.

Symptoms include the truck never shifting into fourth, slipping or flaring in overdrive, a high-RPM highway cruise, or an overdrive light that flashes.

How the 48RE Overdrive Works

In first through third gear, the overdrive unit is locked in direct drive by the overdrive direct clutch, which is held applied by spring pressure. To shift into fourth, hydraulic pressure applies the overdrive clutch and releases the direct clutch. An overrunning clutch in the overdrive unit allows freewheeling in certain conditions. The shift to fourth and converter lockup are controlled electronically through solenoids on the valve body, using inputs such as vehicle speed, throttle position and fluid temperature.

Common Causes of 48RE Overdrive Problems

Overdrive and Lockup Solenoids

If the overdrive solenoid or its wiring fails, the transmission will not shift into fourth. A related problem is converter lockup failing to engage. These are electrical issues that often come with codes and can be repaired without a full rebuild.

Overdrive Off Switch and Inputs

A faulty overdrive off switch on the shifter, a bad throttle position or accelerator pedal signal, or a fluid temperature sensor reading cold can keep the truck out of overdrive. The computer simply never commands the shift.

Overdrive Clutch Wear

Towing heavy loads in fourth gear, especially with added engine power, can burn the overdrive clutch. The result is slipping or flaring in overdrive and often burnt fluid. Many diesel owners tow in third on long grades to avoid this.

Overdrive Direct Clutch and Spring

The direct clutch relies on a heavy spring for apply force. Wear or damage here can cause slipping in the lower gears that feels like an overdrive-unit problem, or a flare during the 3-4 shift.

Overrunning Clutch Failure

A worn or failed overrunning clutch in the overdrive unit can cause loss of drive, slipping or noise. This is an internal repair.

Governor Pressure System

The 48RE uses an electronically controlled governor pressure system. A faulty governor pressure sensor or solenoid causes erratic shift timing, late shifts or no upshifts, which can be mistaken for an overdrive problem.

What You Can Safely Check

If the truck slips in overdrive while towing, lock it out of overdrive and drive gently to avoid burning the clutches. Read towing and your transmission.

How Sun West Diagnoses the 48RE

We scan for codes, check the solenoid circuits and the governor pressure system, and confirm the inputs the computer uses to command overdrive. A road test shows whether the transmission is being commanded into fourth and slipping, or never commanded at all. We inspect the fluid and pan debris, and pressure test when needed. See our diesel transmission repair services.

Repair Options

Trucks with added power often benefit from a billet input shaft, upgraded clutches and a heavy-duty converter. Talk to us about transmission upgrades.

What It Costs

Cost ranges widely, from an electrical fix to a full rebuild with upgrades. It depends on the truck, the failure and your towing and power goals. Call (623) 473-9800 for a free quote, and see our Ram transmission prices page. Qualifying rebuilds and replacements include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty with no deductible on covered repairs.

When to Stop Driving

If overdrive slips under load, stop towing in fourth. If the transmission slips in other gears, the fluid smells burnt or the truck loses drive, stop driving and call.

48RE Overdrive Problems: FAQ

Can I drive without overdrive?

Short term, yes, at moderate speeds. Highway driving in third raises RPM and heat, so get it diagnosed soon.

Is the 48RE the same as the 47RE?

They are closely related. The 48RE has updates for higher diesel torque, but many parts and failure patterns are similar.

Do you build 48REs for towing?

Yes. We can build to your truck’s use and power level.
