48RE Transmission Rebuild & Repair in Glendale, AZ (Dodge Ram Cummins)
Sun West Transmissions — Glendale, AZ. Free estimates, honest diagnosis and a 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty on qualifying rebuilds and replacements.
The 48RE is the final evolution of Chrysler’s four-speed heavy-duty automatic, and it is best known as the transmission behind the 5.9L Cummins in third-generation Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. It arrived in the early 2000s and stayed until the 6.7L Cummins era brought the 68RFE. Owners love these trucks for their simple, durable engines, and many are still pulling fifth wheels, gooseneck trailers and work equipment across Arizona.
Sun West Transmissions in Glendale rebuilds, repairs and upgrades the 48RE. We know where these units wear out and how to build them to last behind a hard-working Cummins.
48RE Applications
- Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with the 5.9L Cummins diesel, early 2000s to the mid-2000s
- Dodge Ram 3500 chassis cab models with the 5.9L Cummins in certain years
The 48RE shares its basic design with the 47RE but uses stronger internal parts and updated controls. The later 6.7L Cummins trucks use the 68RFE, and heavier Ram trucks may use an Aisin unit.
How the 48RE Is Built
At its core, the 48RE is a three-speed TorqueFlite-style transmission with a separate overdrive section at the back. The valve body and governor pressure system control first through third, while the computer controls overdrive and converter lockup. It has front and rear bands that require periodic adjustment, and a throttle valve cable that must match the engine. Because it relies on a mix of hydraulics and electronics, diagnosis needs to look at both.
Common 48RE Problems
Overdrive Problems
The overdrive clutch and sprag carry a heavy load on the highway. Owners notice flaring into fourth, slipping in overdrive or the truck dropping out of fourth when climbing. Our page on 48RE overdrive problems covers this in more detail.
Converter Lockup Slip and Heat
If the converter clutch slips, the transmission temperature climbs fast. A rising RPM at steady cruise, especially with a trailer, is a classic sign. Upgraded converters are common on these trucks.
Direct Clutch and Band Wear
Slipping on the 2-3 shift and in third under load usually means worn direct clutches. Worn or loose bands can cause soft 1-2 shifts and slow reverse engagement.
Governor Pressure Sensor and Solenoid
When the governor pressure components fail, the truck may stay in first, shift erratically or flare. These are known, testable faults.
Overheating from Towing
Heavy loads and summer temperatures push transmission fluid hard. Burnt fluid leads to glazed clutches and sticky valves. Adding a cooler is one of the best protections. See our auxiliary cooling page.
How We Diagnose a 48RE
Our technicians check fluid condition, read codes, test governor pressure components and solenoids, verify TV cable and band adjustment, check line pressure and road test the truck, with a load when practical. We also ask about engine modifications, since added power changes what the transmission needs. The answer might be a simple repair, a stock rebuild or a built unit.
48RE Rebuild and Upgrade Options
- Stock rebuild: new soft parts, worn hard parts replaced, valve body serviced, converter serviced or replaced.
- Towing build: upgraded clutch packs, improved overdrive components, valve body changes for firmer shifts and a heavy-duty converter.
- Performance build: for trucks with significant added power, with stronger shafts, billet components and a matched converter.
Our 47RE and 48RE upgrade page explains these builds further. Qualifying rebuilds include our 3-year / 40,000-mile warranty.
48RE Rebuild Cost
Cost depends on the build level, the converter, damage found at teardown and cooling upgrades. Estimates are free, and we explain each option before you decide. For a closer look, see our diesel transmission rebuild cost guide and our Ram transmission prices page. Financing is available.
Tips for 5.9L Cummins Owners
Have the bands adjusted when the fluid and filter are serviced, keep an eye on transmission temperature with a gauge, and avoid lugging the engine in overdrive with a heavy trailer. Locking out overdrive on long climbs can reduce heat. Our towing guide has more practical advice.
48RE Transmission FAQ
Is the 48RE stronger than the 47RE?
It has updated and stronger parts in key areas, but it is still a four-speed design that benefits from upgrades behind a modified Cummins.
Why does my RPM rise on the highway when towing?
That often points to torque converter clutch slip or overdrive slip. It should be checked before the heat causes more damage.
Should I add a transmission temperature gauge?
Yes. On a towing Cummins truck, a temperature gauge is one of the most useful tools you can have.
